About Nabudde Annet

Nabudde Annet is 31 years old, separated with her husband and she individually takes care of the four children. She works in the department of Quality in Wagagai Flowers Limited. Basically, they arrange and sort flowers for packaging. She is heavily constrained in providing for the children due to the prevailing surrounding situations. The father denied the children and she lost hope. She tried to report to Kasenyi Police Station to create fear in him so that he could take up his responsibilities. This was in April 2017 but did not yield any good. He still confirmed to her that even though she was to let him be imprisoned, there is nothing she would get from him. He completely refused.

More to that, relatives to the husband do not render her any support, instead, they support their son (father to the kids) to torture the mother to the children. Nabudde lives in Kisembi-Nkumba though with only her children in the home abandoned by the husband. She just hears people that her former husband is around or in the area or stays within the area but the children and herself do not know exactly where he lives.

Relatives to the husband also support their son and listen to him, whatever he says. The mother-in-law and the brother to the husband keep to poke very painful words that Nabudde does not wish well their son, words that really prick her at heart. So to step out as a good mother, she stays with all her children and fights on to make sure that they live and grow up well.

When she heard people talk about See Them Grow Foundation, she decided to get there and ask from some help because she has no financial ability via school dues for her children. She had

thought about throwing the children to the village where they do not study, but chose to approach STGF offices because she wishes all her children to have good education. STGF accepted to help some of her children and she feels her hope is lifted up, more so about her children’s future.

Sunday Kasawuli

Kasawuli is eight years old and was born in 2009. He was brought to Namusisi Bitijuma before the death of his father. The mother’s whereabouts are not known. Initially, he used to live with his parents at Nsazi island. His mother is the one that organized for Kasawuli to be brought to his grandmother (Bitijuma Namusisi) using boat transport along Kasenyi fishing site. The Boda Boda men at Kasenyi then offered themselves voluntarily to drive the young boy to Namusisi’ place. After sometime, while this boy stayed with grandmother in Kisembi-Nkumba, his father passed on. Namusisi considers this child her grandchild because her current husband is the father to the late parent (dad) to Kasawuli Sunday. The late father was a fisherman at Nsazi island but still, almost fishing is the economic activity circulating in the entire family. Until of recent when a national order was passed country wide to pause fishing in Uganda water bodies to let fish grow.

Shadiah Nakazibwe
Shadiah Nakazibwe

Shadiah is seven years old and an orphan. She was born to Ssenyonjo (decased) and Aisha Nakaye. The late father passed on five years back but she was abandoned by the mother at an age of 18 months. The information that reaches Shadiah’s guardian is that Nakaye is here and there trying to make ends meet for herself. Communications from her to check on her child is really scarce. However, she (Nakaye Aisha) is a daughter to Namusisi Bitijuma, the guardian to Shadiah. The real whereabouts of Shadiah’s mother are not known. Currently (2017), she is in Top class at Nkumba Preparatory Primary School.

About Bitijuma Nakazibwe

She is a married woman aged fifty. She never had a chance to go to school in her life. She has and bore ten children. Six of them are to the first home she got married in and the four belong to the second man where she is. She is also the primary guardian to Kasawuli Sunday and Nakazibwe Shadiah. The four children are all below eighteen years of age. Nakazibwe’s parents and close relatives, sisters and brothers all passed on. She is all alone. She was given Kasawuli when he was 3 years old. Since Baby class, she has been toiling to ensure that he attains education. Shadiah was an infant who had not yet even learnt how to say a single word by the time she was abandoned by her mother to Nakazibwe.

Bitijuma says that the father to Kasawuli was very alcoholic and negligent about children’s rights. She goes on to say that he would hardly support his own children. The housing structure at Nsazi island are temporary and of poor quality with no privacy and most children are insecure. In her home, she currently has eight children. Two are above 18 years and the six are below that age. The big boy in the home goes goes to quarrying to offer casual labor and earn some money at the end of the day. Joseph Byaruhanga
Joseph Byaruhanga

Byaruhanga Joseph is four years old and his birthday is 23rd/February/2013. He was born in Kyaterekera Buwolo-Kagadi in Kibaale district to the late Mr. Mukisa Isaiah, who was a son to Margaret Namirimu, now, the guardian to Joseph. He is now in Baby class at Talemwa Junior School, one of the good pre-schools in Nkumba village. Together with the family of the guardian, they live in Kisembi-Nkumba village.

About Namirimu Margaret

She is the grandmother and guardian to Joseph. She is 48 years old and married. She has full responsibility over the child’s necessities like food, clothing, paying medical bills and education. She, too, is an orphan with both parents dead. In addition to that, her son, who was born in 1992 (the father to Joseph) passed on early this year. She has one child (a girl) who is above eighteen but she recently left home to rent a room for herself as she searches around for work to do to improve her life status. This girl dropped out of school without completing senior four due to mum’s financial constraints. She learnt the skill of building from the father and usually, she works on construction sites.

Mrs. Margaret Namirimu is a farmer. Often she requests for people’s vacant land spaces to grow some foods as she sells off some for surplus. She has no land or any property of her own. Where they reside, they were assigned to keep the house and the surrounding premises. This came about because the husband is a builder. So, in the due course of constructing the building, he was allowed to watch over it or stay there by the owner. The entire family does not have land on their own.

What she says about Joseph Byaruhanga

Initially he had not started school at all and she had no hope either. But now, See Them Grow Foundation (STGF) supported him to study. The grandchild (Joseph) loves the school and he studies well. She was paralysed on hearing about the sad news about the death of Joseph’s dad and also the fact that he was also her son, her only son. Later on, Joseph was brought to live with her and she wondered how to nurture this nice boy with no stable livelihood or skills to earn her some income.

Concerning STGF

Because of the sponsorship from See Them Grow Foundation to her children, she believes her late son’s prayers have surely been answered because he was surely a prayerful man. She is grateful to STGF and all the partners therein for the beautiful offer of ensuring that Joseph gets quality education. She prays so much that God blesses See Them Grow Foundation.

Nanyonjo Catherine
Nanyonjo Catherine

Nanyange Immaculate and Nanyonjo Catherine are orphans initially from Kiboga district where they used to live with both parents (mum and dad). Immaculate is eight years old and Catherine is six years old. The late father to these beautiful girls was called Kaloli ziwa. He passed on four and half years ago and their mother disappeared after she dropped them to Nanyombi Teddy (the elder sister to their late father) in Kisembi-Nkumba village in Wakiso district. Since then, the guardians to these children, whether have never heard from the mother to these children, whether she is still alive of not, nobody knows. In this year 2017, Nanyange Immaculate is 8 years old and in primary two class. Nanyonjo Catherine Gloria is 6 years old and in Top class. They are all at Nkumba Preparatory School in Kisembi-Nkumba village.

About Nanyombi Teddy (The Guardian)

About Nanyombi Teddy, the main guardian to these children is aged 67. About her education, she never completed primary level. She bore ten children in her life though seven are still alive but have their own families now. Mrs. Nanyombi Teddy is a homemaker. Sometimes she fries cassava for sale to sustain her family though still the situation has completely failed to shift to a minimum standard of living. There is no one with a stable livelihood and they are all heavily constrained in the home. She is married to Mr. Lule Mulisio. Together with him, they take care of the seven children (not their biological children) who are all below 18 years of age.  All the seven children are for relatives, no child she bore in the home stays with them and she has to make all ends meet for a better life to these children. She fights on to ensure that children in the home have what to eat by searching for food all round to give them.

Before See Them Grow  Foundation (STGF) took the step to sponsor two of the children, both madam Nansana (another auntie to the children) and Nanyombi Teddy have been the most influential people in promoting these children’s rights to come to realty like clothing, food, shelter, healthcare and education. However, the major obstacle towards towards adequately providing these necessities has been absence of decent work/job to do, particularly to get school fees for these children.

When asked about why she would seek assistance for STGF in particular sponsorship for these two children, this is what Nanyombi Teddy said

“siyina  busobozi, abaana banaku, emirimu tewali ate naamanyi gankedeelaa. Abengganda  abandinyambyeko ku baana bano babeera wala naffe ate nga mbagaliza okusoma okulungi. Njagala abaana abo basome bamaleko kubanga taata wabwe yali musajja mugezi.nekilala nabo banaaba basobola okutuyamba mu maaso eyo. Essuubi lino lyenina linsidikiriza okubagaliza ennyo okusoma.

Literally meaning “I do not have the ability, these children are orphans, no work to do and earn and still, I have grown weak. Our relatives who would be of help to these children stay very far away yet I wish these children quality regular education. I would like these children to study and graduate because even their father was a bright man. Next, the children will be able to help us in the time to come. This hope that I have stimulates me to want them to study.”

With the availability of more funds to STGF, children are transferred and put in better schools where they are holistically equipped to be better people.
